Mayumi Clothing promotes Filipino culture through eco-friendly garments made from pineapple and abaca fabrics, supporting local artisans and preserving traditional weaving practices.
Context
At Mayumi Clothing, the brand focuses on sustainability and preserving Filipino culture. The clothing is made from traditional fabrics like piña (pineapple textile) and abaca (from non-bearing banana trees).
These fabrics are not only eco-friendly but are also a big part of the Filipino weaving tradition. We work closely with local artisans to keep these old weaving practices alive, while celebrating our heritage through our clothing.
Problems
Even though piña and abaca fabrics have deep cultural roots and are sustainable, many people in the global fashion market aren’t aware of them. The challenge of Mayumi Clothing is figuring out how to communicate the brand’s commitment to both Filipino heritage and sustainability, while standing out in a competitive industry. The challenge is also to create a strong visual identity that connects with the audience and support the mission of preserving Filipino culture.

Method
There aren’t many Filipino-inspired designs out there, so I took inspiration from our rich history and culture. I studied old photos, stamps, traditional clothing, and national symbols. I also learned about the different weaving techniques and the types of fabrics that Filipinos have used for centuries. This project allowed me to explore my roots and bring a piece of Filipino culture into modern fashion.
Solution
The logo symbolizes softness, modesty, and a gentle approach to fashion.
Logo
The Mayumi Clothing logo is based on the iconic sleeves of traditional Filipino clothing. These sleeves not only signify elegance and grace but also serve as a visual representation of the brand’s core values.
The word Mayumi means gentle, soft, and modest in an old Filipino term, which embodies the brand. Mayumi represents being gentle with the Earth, while the clothes are soft and reserved, just like the values the name holds.
Icons
Solihiya Pattern
Created an icon based from the traditional rattan weaving pattern Solihiya, it is a rattan weave known for its sunburst design. It’s a famous Filipino pattern and has been used for generations.
Pineapple (Piña)
The pineapple icon represents Piña, a fabric made from pineapple fibres and has been a part of Filipino weaving traditions. Piña and abaca (fibre from non-bearing banana trees) are not only eco-friendly but also keep the tradition alive in a modern, sustainable way.
Sun Rays
The sun rays in the logo come from the Philippine flag. There are eight rays, which stand for unity, freedom, and democracy. For me, it also symbolizes hope and the belief that we can create change—whether in fashion, sustainability, or our communities.

Assets
I created full branding assets for social media, website, and retail in-store and marketing collateral design. I designed engaging social media graphics and content that highlight the brand’s heritage, sustainable practices, and the unique qualities of pineapple and abaca fabrics. Additionally, I design website elements that effectively showcase the brand’s story, products, and commitment to cultural preservation.
For retail design, I develop in-store assets that enhance the customer experience while emphasizing Mayumi Clothing's traditional and sustainable values. I also design promotional materials and signage that align seamlessly with the brand’s visual identity.
Takeaways
Working on Mayumi Clothing has been a journey of creativity and self-discovery. I realized that the more I work on it, the more ideas I get. This project not only helped me understand myself better but also brought me closer to my culture. It’s meaningful to me, and I hope that comes through in the designs. Embracing tradition while working toward a more sustainable future makes Mayumi Clothing something I’m truly proud of.
